RIO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL), June 23: Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has pledged to increase development assistance to Nepal.

After a bilateral meeting with the Australian Prime Minister on Friday on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai said the Australian government is positive about increasing cooperation to bring economic prosperity to Nepal.

"Australia is eager to extend support to Nepal for modernization of agriculture, hydropower development and tourism promotion," Bhattarai quoted the Australian Prime Minister as saying.

The two leaders dwelled on issues of bilateral interests and mutual cooperation, said secretary at the prime ministerīs office Leelamani Paudel.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Dr Bhattarai briefed his Australian counterpart about efforts being taken to conclude the constitution writing process and expressed the hope that there would soon be consensus between the political parties.
