Guwahati, Oct 24 : In the by-polls to four assembly seats in Assam, BJP has retained all three seats while Badaruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won one seat.
The BJP won Ratabari, Rangapara and Sonari seats while AIUDF won Jania seat.
By-election was necessitated as Kripanath Mallah (Ratabari), Tapan Gogoi (Sonari) and Pallab Lochan Das (Rangapara) of BJP and Congress MLA of Jania Abdul Kalaque won in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
In Ratabari BJP candidate Bijoy Malakar defeated his nearest rival Congress candidate Keshab Prasad Rajak with a margin of 24,001 votes, while BJP candidate Rajen Borthakur defeated Congress candidate Kartik Kurmi by 49,559 votes in Rangapara.
In Sonari, BJP candidate Nabanita Handique defeated her nearest rival Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Suri with a margin of 15,430 votes, while AIUDF candidate Rafiqul Islam defeated Congress candidate Shamsul Hoque by 35,141 votes in Jania.
On the other hand, Balajied Kupar Synrem of the United Democratic Party (UDP), son of deceased MLA and former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy won the Shella seat in Meghalaya by defeating his nearest rival candidate with a huge margin.
Synrem won the seat by defeating Independent candidate Grace Kharpuri with a margin of 6221 votes.
Synrem secured 12002 votes, while Independent candidate Grace Kharpuri received 5781 votes, 4327 votes by Mosjo Rockfeller Wanswett of PDF, 1715 votes by Batyngshain Ryngnga of Congress.
The by-poll to the Shella seat in the Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district was necessitated following the death of Synrem's father Donkupar Roy, who was the sitting MLA.
Donkupar Roy was a former Chief Minister and the speaker of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly.
On the other hand, Independent candidate Chakat Aboh, the wife of NPP leader Tirong Aboh who was shot dead in May, won the by-poll to Khonsa West assembly seat in Arunachal Pradesh.
Chakat Aboh had won the seat by defeating Independent candidate Azet Homtok by a margin of 1887 votes.
Chakat Aboh secured 5705 votes while her nearest rival Azet Homtok received 3818 votes.
It is to be mentioned that, Chakat Aboh's husband Tirong Aboh was gunned down by suspected NSCN militants along with others including his son.
The by-poll for the Khonsa West seat was necessitated following Tirong Aboh's death.
