Guwahati, Oct 24 : Balajied Kupar Synrem of the United Democratic Party (UDP) - son of deceased MLA and former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy has sealed the Shella seat by defeating his nearest rival candidate with a huge margin.
Synrem won the seat by defeating Independent candidate Grace Kharpuri with a margin of 6221 votes.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Synrem secured 12002 votes, while Independent candidate Grace Kharpuri received 5781 votes, 4327 votes by Mosjo Rockfeller Wanswett of PDF, 1715 votes by Batyngshain Ryngnga of Congress, 742 votes by Joshua Wajri of BJP, 444 votes by Komen Laitmon (Independent).
A total of six candidates are fray in the Shella by-poll.
The by-poll to the Shella seat in the Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district was necessitated following the death of Synrem's father Donkupar Roy, who was the sitting MLA.
Donkupar Roy was a former Chief Minister and the speaker of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly.
