Kathmandu, Nepal, August 24, 2021: Central Committee members close to senior leader of the CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal have been staying in Chandragiri Hills Resort in Kathmandu since Monday to hold discussions on the future course of action including agenda of the proposed CPN (Unified Socialist) party.

The Nepal-led faction has already registered an application at the Election Commission (EC) to register a new party with the signature of 58 Central Committee members. It is said that all the 58 Central Committee members have reached at the resort.

It is said that the Central Committee members including leader Nepal would directly reach to EC from the resort for the verification of members of the proposed Central Committee of the party on Wednesday.

Responding to the application to register a new party, the EC has already summoned the central members for verification on Wednesday. It is said that the EC has summoned to validate the members of the CPN-UML central committee elected from the last general convention. Out of the 203 Central Committee members, Nepal-led faction has submitted the signatures of 58 Central Committee members that include about 28 percent.

The Political Party Act, which was amended through an ordinance, has made a provision that support of 20 percent of the Central Committee members or the Parliamentary Party would be sufficient to split their mother party. The provision of 40 percent members of both the Central Committee and the Parliamentary Party need to split a party was amended through the ordinance.

Though the establishment faction of the UML led by Oli had registered an application at the EC claiming that the support of 58 Central Committee members would not sufficient to split the UML as number of Central Committee members reached into 260 from 203.

Following the differences in the party, Oli had appointed additional 57 Central Committee members. However, the EC has decided to recognize only the members elected from the general convention.

The critics, particularly the leaders and cadres close to the establishment faction of the UML, have alleged the Nepal led faction that this move would have taken to prevent possible enticing of Central Committee members before the crucial signature verification process at the EC.

During a public function Oli had said recently that Nepal-led faction would not garner 20 percent support of the Central Committee members to register a new party if he tries so.
