Kathmandu, Nepal, February 25, 2020: Former Speaker and standing committee member of ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Suvash Chandra Nemwang has said that the constitution should not be amended just for the sake of personal benefits.
Nemwang, who is also a member of the taskforce formed by the party to amend the constitution, has made the statement in the mean time when the ruling head NCP has sharply divided on ranges of issues including the issue of constitution amendment.
‘Party should not take any initiative to amend the constitution just to facilitate a particular person,’ Nemwang, who is considered as the close confident of Prime Minister and chairman KP Sharma Oli, said.’
His hint was clear that he is not in favor to amend the constitution to allow a National Assembly member to become Prime Minister. The NCP, particularly the faction led by another party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been lobbying hard to appoint party’s Vice-chairperson Bam Dav Gautam as member of the Upper House to pave the way to present him as the alternative candidate of the Prime Minister by amending in the constitution.
The NCP’s secretariat meeting held on Sunday had formed a taskforce comprising three members- Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nemwang himself and Khim Lal Devkota, to amend in the constitution. However, the Oli led camp has claimed that such a taskforce was not formed in a formal manner with the mandate to amend in the constitution.
When asked about the taskforce, he said that none have informed him formally about the secretariat decision in connection to the taskforce. However, he revealed about the Monday’s meeting among taskforce members. We had met in a informal manner on the basis of the media reports about the taskforce, he said.
