KATHMANDU, August 2: Most of the lawmakers supported the proposal of the Election Commission that it should get the authority to announce poll dates in the upcoming days.
In the meeting of the State Affairs Committee under the Legislature-Parliament on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhee Prasad Yadav presented this proposal before the meeting.
Similarly, deliberations on the Bill relating to Election of the Member of House of Representatives-2017 have begun in the meeting.
The lawmakers expressed positive views regarding the EC's proposal, saying the trend of announcing the election date by political parties and government at their favourable time in lack of authority to the EC to announce the poll dates has been affecting the smooth organization of the periodic elections.
Similarly, the lawmakers also suggested the government to make arrangement of providing equal term through lucky draw respecting the mandate of the people if both candidates garner equal votes in the election. There is now a practice that the candidates getting the same number of votes in the election can be winner or loser on the basis of lucky draw.
On the occasion, Home Minister Janardan Sharma familiarized the Committee about the rationale, necessity and provisions of the delegated legislation of the bill.
He assured that the Committee's suggestions regarding the bill would be incorporated. A 312-point amendment proposal has been registered on the bill.
Lawmakers also stressed that the date of periodic elections should be mentioned in the Act as well as suggested the government's representatives to bring the bill in order to hold the local-level election or House of Representatives on a single date.
Discussion regarding the amendment proposal on the bill would continue on Thursday. RSS
