Kathmandu, Nepal, Aug. 2, 2022: The government is mulling the idea to hold the elections for the federal and provincial assembly on November 20, 2022. To be held cabinet meeting, which would be likely on Tuesday, would take the decision to this effect.

As the Election Commission (EC) of Nepal requires at least 120 days to make necessary preparations to hold the elections, the government is preparing to announce the election date for November 20, a cabinet member said on Monday preferring anonymity.

The EC had already proposed the government to announce the election date on November 18. As the government deserves the authority to announce the election date, it is mulling the idea to announce the election date just two days later than the proposed date.

As EC feels comfortable to make the necessary preparations if it gets more than 120 days, it had recommended the government on July 6 stating that November 18 would be appropriate for holding the federal and provincial elections in a single phase.

The government has already been facing criticism, particular from the main opposition CPN UML, for not announcing the date for the elections on time. The UML has even blamed the government and the ruling partners of attempting to differ the provincial and federal assembly elections.
