Kathmandu, Nepal, February 19, 2020: Editors of some print and online media outlets in Nepal have condemned the press statement released by the Ambassador of China to Nepal on Tuesday against of the article published in the The Kathmandu Post regarding the coronavirus.

Our attention has been drawn towards the statement issued by the Embassy of China on Tuesday regarding a content published on The Kathmandu Post daily, states the joint press release issued by the group of editors.

We respect a person or an institution to express their dissent over materials published in the media but strongly disagree with actions issuing threat against a specific individual for expressing opinion or publishing a report, the statement issued by the editors has stated.

Expressing dissatisfaction over an article published by The Kathmandu Post, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal had on Tuesday, released a press statement stating that the embassy reserve the right of action against Anup Kaphle, the Editor-in-Chief of The Kathmandu Post.

The Kathmandu Post published an article which, with a picture of malicious intention, deliberately smeared the efforts of the Chinese government and people fighting against the new coronavirus pneumonia and even viciously attacked the political system of China,’ the statement of the Chinese embassy stated. 

Likewise, the Federation of Nepalese journalists (FNJ) has also condemned the press statement issued by the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu.
