Kathmandu, Nepal, January 09, 2022: After a hiatus of 16 years, the government has finally recognized the late king Pritihi Narayan Shah as the founder of modern Nepal and decided to grant a public holiday on Poush 27.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday took a decision to grant a public holyday on Wednesday to celebrate the ‘Pritihvi Jayanti’ as ‘National Unity Day (NUD)’. However, the meeting has not clarified that whether or not the government will officially celebrate the day as the NUD.

Nepal used to celebrate the birth anniversary of late king Shah as the NUD since decades. However, with the political change in 2006, it was discontinued claiming that unity made by late King Shah in terms of geography did not incorporated ethnic, cultural and religious unity.

The decision of the government comes in the wake of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP)’s condition to extend its support to the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government, which has scheduled to take a vote of confidence in parliament on Tuesday.
