Kathmandu, Nepal, Aug. 2, 2022: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization of Nepalese lawyers, has urged the House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota to proceed with the impeachment motion that is already registered at the federal parliament against of the suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
A team of NBA officials requested to finalize the case as soon as possible by reaching out at the office of the Speaker Sapkota at Singha Durbar on Monday. As the impeachment motion registered at the HoR against Rana has been pending since long period, the team of the NBA put forth a demand that there should not be delay to proceed with the impeachment motion against of the Chief Justice Rana.
Lawmakers of the ruling parties, particularly from the ruling head Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Center had registered an impeachment motion against Rana at the Federal Parliament Secretariat on February 13. The HoR had also formed an impeachment recommendation committee on March 7. However, neither the committee nor the parliament has worked on the impeachment motion.
With the registration of the impeachment motion, Chief Justice Rana was automatically suspended from the post. The reluctance of the Parliament to precede the impeachment motion has not only deprived the suspended Chief Justice Rana, who has been under suspended since 4 months, to decide his fate but weakened the parliamentary system, the NBA representatives said during the meeting.
We have categorically demanded with the Speaker Sapkota that the impeachment motion registered against of Chief Justice Rana has to be settled immediately before ending the current session of parliament, Anjita Khanal, General Secretary of the NBA said.
