Kathmandu, Nepal: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has expressed its serious concerns over the controversial remarks made by External Affairs Minister of India Sushma Swaraj.

Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, the MoFA has said ‘the reference made about the public participation at the Civic Felicitation program held in honor of the Indian Prime Minister of India in Janakpur on May 11, 2018 was unfortunate.

The MoFA has issued the statement just a day after Swaraj publicly admitted her mistake and apologized for the same, thanks to the widespread criticism, though the government had not spoken even a single word promptly.

The Main opposition party Nepali Congress had also criticized the statements. Nepali Congress youth leader and member of the parliament Gagan Kumar Thapa had twitted a message criticizing the External Affairs Minister of India Swaraj for the comments.

‘Regrettable that India's External Affairs Minister @SushmaSwaraj described Janakpur's population that @narendramodi greeted as Indians. One wonders what the confusion was, or if this was casual undermining of Nepal's sovereignty,’ Thapa has states in his tweet message.

While addressing a press conference on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the NDA government, Swaraj had said that no prime minister of India before Modi had addressed lakhs of ‘Indians’ in Nepal's Janakpur recently.

However, she latter tweeted an apology stating ‘this was a mistake on my part. I sincerely apologise for this.’
