Kathmandu, Nepal, December 8, 2020: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), constitutional human rights watchdog of the country, has reported that the country’s human rights situation did not improve as expected last year.

Submitting annual report for the last fiscal year 2019/20 to President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Monday, the NHRC has stated that the existing caste-based discrimination, lack of access to health and education, challenges to the right to life, restricted consumer rights, and among other indicators were depriving people of fundamental rights.

The NHRC has also blamed the government for failing to pay sufficient attention to the protection of rights of women, Dalits, marginalized communities, minorities, people with disabilities, and other disadvantaged groups.

Likewise, the NHRC has also complained for not taking actions against those the human rights watchdog found guilty of different crimes. We have so far recommended action against 280 perpetrators who had violated human rights, but, action is taken from the limited number, the NHRC has stated.

However, it has expressed its expectations that there would be some improvements in the situation this year.
