Kathmandu, Nepal, October 26, 2021: Citizenship less children of Nepali citizens by birth demands their reorganization as Nepali national. Citizenship-less Nepalese Struggle Committee has demanded so by submitting the memorandum to the different state agencies.
The committee has on Monday submitted the memorandum at the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Human Right Commission, United Nation Development Program and the Madhesi Commission demanding amendment of the Nepali Citizenship Act to ensure their right to have a citizenship.
The government had introduced an ordinance to amend the act on May 23 allowing the children of citizens by birth and children of Nepali mothers whose father could not be traced to obtain Nepali citizenship.
The Supreme Court, however, had stayed the ordinance on June 10 responding to the writ petitions filed against of the ordinance. The committee has a claim that about 190,000 children of Nepali citizens by birth have deprived of Nepali citizenship.
Nepal's Interim Constitution- 2007 had made a provision of citizenship by birth to the people who were residing in Nepal prior to the commencement of the constitution in 1990. However, constitution of Nepal promulgated in 2015 has obliterated the provision.
