Kathmandu, Nepal, December 20, 2022: As the President Bidya Devi Bhandari served a seven-day deadline for the parties to stake claim for the formation of a new government as per Article 76 (2) of the constitution on Sunday, political parties represent in the House of Representatives (HoR) have stepped up their efforts not only to pick the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader but also to form a consensus government.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), CPN (Unified Socialist), and Janamat Party have elected their Parliament Party (PP) leaders on Monday while the Nepali Congress (NC) has announced the election date to pick the PP leader on Wednesday.
As there are no contenders for the post of PP leader within the CPN UML and the CPN Maoist Center, Chairmen duo of the two parties- KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal will be automatically chosen as the PP leader of their respective parties.
Chairman Rabi Lamichhane has been elected as the PP leader of the RSP. A parliamentary party meeting of the RSP held on Monday elected the party Chairman Lamichhane as the PP leader.
RSP has 20 members in the House of Representatives. Seven HoR members were elected through the First Past The Post System (FPTP) while 13 others elected through the Proportional Representation (PR) system.
Likewise, Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has been elected as the leader of the parliamentary party of CPN (Unified Socialists). A meeting of the PP held on Monday elected Nepal as the PP leader.
The party has also elected vice President Rajendra Pandey as the deputy PP leader and deputy General Secretary Prakash Jwala as the Chief whip. CPN United Socialist has 10 members in the HoR under the FPTP system. The party has no members of parliament under PR category as it had failed to emerge as national party by securing threshold of thee percent.
Similarly, chairperson of the Janamat Party, Dr CK Raut has been elected as the PP leader of the party. A PP meeting of the party held on Monday unanimously elected Raut as the PP leader. The party has only one member in the HoR. Chairman Raut has been elected as a member of the HoR from electoral constituency number 2 of Saptari district. The Janamat Party has won five seats under the PR system.
