Guwahati, May 26 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the Dhola-Sadiya bridge over Brahmaputra river to be named after legendary Assamese musician Sudhakontha Dr Bhupen Hazarika after inaugurating the India's longest bridge that connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Modi said that, the bridge locally known as Dhola-Sadiya bridge and the union government decided to name the bridge after Bhupen Hazarika.
The 9.15 km long bridge over Brahmaputra would be called Bhupen Hazarika bridge.
Sudhakontha Bhupen Hazarika was born at Sadiya.
The legendary musician, who passed away in 2011, was awarded the Padmashri in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2001.
He had also received the Dada Saheb Phalke award, highest award of Indian cinema in 1992.
Meanwhile, several organizations including outlawed group ULFA (I) welcomed the centre's decision.
ULFA (I) C-in-C Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom said that his organization has welcomed the PM's announcement.
