Kathmandu, Nepal, March 9, 2021: Following the revival of the then CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) from the Supreme Court (SC) order, Political parties are engaging in to forge a new alliance to form the new coalition government.
As no parties deserve majority strength in the House of Representatives (HoR), there is no alternative of forging alliance between the political parties. The CPN UML, particularly the Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has already initiated process to keep intact the incumbent government.
It is likely that CPN (Maoist Center) would withdraw its support to the incumbent government after the unity as the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has been nullified from the SC order on Sunday. With the SC order the unity between the UML and Maoist Center was not only nullified but the two parties have reversed back in the position before the merger.
Though alliance between the CPN UML and the CPN (Maoist Center) seems impossible due to the souring relationship between the top leaders, particularly the UML chairman Oli and Maoist Center chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, attempts are underway to keep intact the alliance between the two parties.
It is said that some leaders of the Maoist Center have been apprising the party leadership not to withdraw the support to the government but to wait and see for a time being. The Maoist Center would withdraw support to the government only if the possibilities were made to form government by forging alliance with the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), said leader preferring anonymity.
If the CPN Maoist center withdraws its support to the government, CPN UML has to form alliance with the NC or Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) to keep intact the incumbent government. However, both the NC and the JSP have not made their position clear regarding their participation in the government.
CPN-UML has the highest number of seats with 121 followed by NC with 63. Similarly, CPN (Maoist Center) has 53 while the JSP has 34 seats. Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP), Rastriya Janamorcha (RJM) and independent have one each seats in the House of Representatives (HoR). In the 275 members HoR, four lawmakers have been suspended on different charges while one lawmaker has passed away.
Though the NC is at the center point to form a new coalition government, it has not decided yet whether to participate in the coalition government by overthrowing the incumbent Oli led government or to stay in the opposition till the next elections.
We are closely following the developments and will take decision when an appropriate time comes; a NC leader said preferring anonymity. According to him, NC would not extend support to the incumbent government but can participate in the coalition government only it gets chance to lead the coalition government.
