Review Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal, December 17, 2019: The long being prevailed internal rift in the ruling head Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has exposed in the ongoing Standing Committee meeting by pointing fingers visible to each other for launching different factions in the part.

Even though the Co-chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal has already accepted the failures on the leadership’s part, the leaders aligned in different factions of the party have raised serious question marks not only against of the working style of the party leadership but also the motive and intention including the poor performance of the government.

Raising questions marks over the nationality issue, some leaders have asked the government to clarify whether the grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) was provided to Nepal as part of the Indo-Pacific Strategy of the US government or not. The critic leaders have also raised question of competency of the leadership both in the government and party including Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali over the issue of MCC.

Since the documents endorsed by the US government and the statements made by the US ministers clearly state that $500 million grant for Nepal is a part of the US government's Indo-Pacific Strategy, why the government signed the MCC agreement, the NCP leaders duo Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Dev Gurung questioned in the meeting.

As the leaders from the ruling head NCP divided over the agreement, the Co-chair and Prime Minister KP Oli and Minister for Foreign Affairs Gyawali had defended the agreement while speaking in the parliament stating that the government would not endorse the MCC from the parliament.

The multi-million dollar investment grant provided by the US government meant for major infrastructure projects has fallen in limbo due to the differences within the ruling head NCP.

Not only the issue of nationality but also the issues of poor performance of the government and growing factionalism in the party have become a matter to debate in the ongoing standing committee meeting.

During the meeting on Monday, the leaders from the Madhav Nepal led camp criticized the party leadership for failing even to hold the regular meeting of the party. The leaders from the formerly Maoist have criticized the government.
