Kathmandu, Nepal, August 3, 2021: It is likely that the scheduled 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress (NC) would be differed at again by at least one month.

Though the party leadership seems committed to hold the convention on the scheduled date, it would not possible to hold on September 1-4, 2021 as scheduled earlier, thanks to the differences over the issue of distributing the active membership of the party.

The NC should complete the distribution of active membership of the party to hold the general convention in at the ward, local, electoral constituency, provincial and central level.

As the differences seen over the issue of distributing the active membership is not settled yet, scheduled date would be differed till the first or second week of December, a central leader of the party said preferring anonymity.

Expressing the dissatisfaction over the distribution of active membership of the party, some cadres and the leaders of the party have been staging strike in front of the party’s central office, Sanepa, Lalitpur.

The NC cannot initiate process of the convention even in the ward level unless it settles all the differences seen over the issue of distributing the active membership of the party. It is said that about one month to complete elections at lower levels’ committees before holding election in the center.

Though the NC had to hold its general convention about one year ago, it had been differing the convention date due to the spreading threat of coronavirus infections.  Though the spreading threat of virus has not over yet, the NC has planned to hold the convention to escape the possible legal challenges related to the political parties.

Considering to the delay to hold the convention,   party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also the Prime Minister of the country and the parliamentary party leader of the party, has already instructed the party’s office bearers to consult with the Election Commission to find out the last date on which the party has to hold its general convention.
