Kathmandu, Nepal, Aug. 2, 2022: The reappointment of Janardan Sharma as the Finance Minister is widely criticized from different sectors. Not only the critics, media and oppositions but also the leaders and cadres of the ruling allies have protested the decision to reappointment of Sharma as the Finance Minister.
Even though the charges labeled against Sharma were not proved from the parliamentary panel, the protesting sides have a saying that he should not have reappointed in the same post as Finance Minister considering to his poor performance to handle the Finance Ministry.
The critics have also an allegations that the government and ruling allies, particularly the ruling head Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN (Maoist Center), misused the power by appointing the controversial and non-competent figure in the coveted post like Finance Minister at the time when the country has been facing the clear sign of economic crisis.
Sharma had resigned from the post as Finance Minister on July 6 after the Parliament formed a committee to probe charges that he had employed outsiders to tweak tax rates on the eve of the annual budget presentation day on May 28.
As the committee submitted its report exonerating him of the charges on last Friday, he was reappointed in the post of finance minister. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had recommended the president Bidya Devi Bhandari to appoint Sharma just after the CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal recommended him to this effect.
Not only the critics and oppositions but also the leaders and cadres of the Nepali Congress and Maoist Center have a saying that Prime Minister Deuba should be replaced immediately by reshuffling the cabinet on the basis of the performance of the ministers.
Meanwhile, separate protest programs were organized in different parts of the country including in Kathmandu valley on Monday to protest the decision to reappoint Sharma in the post of finance minister.
Cadres of Youth Congress Nepal staged a protest rally in front of the parliamentary building on Monday. Police have arrested about two dozen protesters by intervening in the protest rally. The protesters have a demand that the finance minister Sharma should be resign from the post.
Likewise, the main opposition CPN-UML also held a demonstration protesting the reappointment of Sharma as finance minister and inflation in Kathmandu on Monday.
