Kathmandu, Nepal, February 15, 2022: Speaker Agni Sapkota has made clear that he will not create any hindrance to but table the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact Agreement in the parliament if the government takes the decision to this effect.
Talking to media persons after an all-party meeting held on Monday, Speaker Sapkota said ‘I will not obstruct tabling the MCC Compact Agreement in parliament for discussion.’
‘I am just an umpire in case of MCC agreement.’ ‘My role is limited to an umpire. Political parties in parliament have a decisive role in this,’ he said.
The statement of Speaker Sapkota has come at the time when there is a speculation that he would not table the MCC agreement in the parliament despite the government’s decision.
As Speaker Sapkota is loyal to CPN (Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, it is suspected that he would influence his former comrade to create hindrance not to endorse the MCC from the parliament.
The Maoist Center and the CPN (United Socialist) have been opposing the idea to table the MCC agreement in the ongoing session of the parliament.
The government, however, has already decided to table the MCC in the parliament. It is believed that the MCC proposal would be tabled on Monday itself of the House session was not postponed again.
