Kathmandu, Nepal: A mosquito bite may seem like a minor irritation, but for thousands of people in Nepal and millions around the world, it can be the beginning of a serious illness.
Nepal is observing World Mosquito Day today with awareness programs and public health activities under the slogan “Small Bite, Big Challenge.” The observance is aimed at reminding people that mosquitoes are not simply a nuisance during the summer and monsoon seasons but carriers of diseases that can sometimes be life-threatening.
From dengue and malaria to chikungunya, kala-azar, filariasis and Japanese encephalitis, mosquito-borne diseases continue to place pressure on health systems around the world. In Nepal, the concern is becoming more visible as these diseases are being detected in a wider geographical area.
According to the Ministry of Health and Population and the Department of Health Services, around 18,710 people were affected by vector-borne diseases in Nepal during the last fiscal year.
Health officials say 168 mosquito species have so far been identified in Nepal. While not every mosquito species transmits disease, the diversity of mosquitoes and the changing environmental conditions are important factors in understanding the country's growing vector-borne disease risk.
For many Nepali families, dengue has become a familiar health concern, particularly during the monsoon. Hospitals and health centers frequently see patients arriving with high fever, severe headaches, body aches and other symptoms associated with mosquito-borne infections.
But the threat is no longer limited to the country's warmer southern plains.
Mosquitoes Moving Into New Areas
Health authorities have increasingly raised concerns about the appearance of vector-borne diseases in areas that were previously considered less vulnerable.
According to Dr. Gokarna Dahal, chief of the Vector Disease Control Branch, vector-borne diseases have recently been reported in 56 districts of Nepal.
Climate change is adding another layer to the problem. Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns can create favorable conditions for mosquitoes to survive and reproduce in areas where colder temperatures previously restricted their spread.
For a country like Nepal, where the landscape rises dramatically from the Terai plains to the Himalayan mountains, even a gradual change in the geographical range of mosquitoes can have significant public health consequences.
A community that once considered mosquito-borne diseases to be a problem of the lowlands may increasingly find itself having to deal with the same risks.
A Global Problem
Nepal's experience reflects a much larger global trend.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says vector-borne diseases account for more than 17 percent of all infectious diseases worldwide, causing more than 700,000 deaths each year. Mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting some of the world's most important infectious diseases, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis.
Malaria remains one of the world's biggest mosquito-borne health challenges. WHO estimated that there were 282 million malaria cases and 610,000 deaths in 2024, with the overwhelming majority of deaths occurring in Africa.
Dengue has also expanded dramatically. WHO estimates that roughly half of the world's population is at risk of dengue, with an estimated 100–400 million infections occurring each year.
The growing global spread of dengue has demonstrated how quickly mosquito-borne diseases can cross geographical boundaries. In recent years, dengue has increasingly appeared in places where it was once uncommon, raising concerns among public health authorities.
Climate Change Changing the Risk
Scientists and health authorities increasingly recognize climate change as an important factor behind changing patterns of mosquito-borne diseases.
Warmer temperatures can allow mosquitoes to survive in new locations and can influence how quickly they reproduce and transmit pathogens. Changes in rainfall can also create additional pools of stagnant water where mosquitoes lay eggs.
For Nepal, the issue is particularly important because communities live across extremely different climatic and geographical zones within a relatively short distance.
The expansion of mosquito habitats does not automatically mean that every new area will experience major outbreaks. Disease transmission also depends on mosquito species, pathogens, human behavior, sanitation, healthcare access and other environmental factors. But the changing conditions make continuous surveillance increasingly important.
Prevention Starts at Home
The Department of Health Services has established laboratories for vector-borne disease control in all seven provinces and is carrying out surveillance and other preventive activities.
However, health officials say government efforts alone cannot eliminate the risk.
Much of mosquito control begins around homes and communities. Removing stagnant water, keeping water containers covered, cleaning drainage areas and disposing of containers that can collect rainwater can reduce potential breeding sites.
People can also reduce the risk of mosquito bites by using mosquito nets, screens and appropriate repellents and by following health advice during periods of increased transmission.
Early medical attention is equally important. Fever accompanied by severe headache, body pain, weakness, rash or other concerning symptoms should not simply be dismissed as a seasonal illness.
More Than an Awareness Day
World Mosquito Day is therefore more than a date marked on the health calendar. It is an opportunity to remind people that disease prevention often begins with small actions.
For Nepal, the challenge is becoming more complicated as diseases appear across more districts and environmental conditions change.
A mosquito is tiny, but the diseases it carries can affect families, communities and entire health systems. As Nepal prepares for a future in which climate and disease patterns may continue to change, sustained surveillance, stronger local health services and public participation will be essential.
The message “Small Bite, Big Challenge” captures that reality well: the mosquito may be small, but preventing the diseases it carries is a challenge that requires attention from every household, community and level of government.
