Guwahati : The Assam Rifles personnel on Thursday had rescued three men dressed like ‘Sadhus’ at Mahur railway station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district while a mob around 500 people attacked them on suspicion of being child lifters.

The trio – two from Uttar Pradesh and one from Gujarat wearing red cloths, who came in a car having Uttar Pradesh registration number (UP-16B-7582), were driving around Mahur area and locals surrounded them near Mahur railway station.

When some people started attacking them on suspicion of being child lifters some conscious people had immediately informed Assam Rifles and army personnel had rescued the trio from the railway station safely.

The three men are now in army custody.

According to the reports, the three men came to Guwahati and took part in the Ambubachi Mela and later went to Kaziranga, followed by visiting Parashuram Kund, 25 km from Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh and reached Mahur in Dima Hasao district and they were scheduled to visit Tripura.

When they reached at Mahur area, they became victims of social media rumours.

On June 8 last, two youths from Guwahati were beaten to death by a mob in the name of child traffickers at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district.
