Kathmandu, Nepal, March 25: Dinesh Thapaliya, who is currently the secretary at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration (MoFFGA), has been recommended for the post of Chief Commissioner at the Election Commission (EC)

A meeting of the Constitutional Council (CC) held o Monday recommended Thapaliya for the coveted post of the constitutional body that is responsible for holding the national elections.

As immediate past Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav had retired on Sunday completing his six-year term in office, EC had become headless.

However, it would take some weeks to assume the post as the recommended name has to be endorsed from the parliament committee before appointment from the president.

Thapaliya topped all those who were in the marathon race to be appointed in the post of the Chief Election Commissioner including existing commissioner of the EC Narendra Dahal. Earlier, it was supposed that Dahal would be promoted in the post considering his seniority.

Likewise, the meeting of the constitutional council has also recommended the name of Bishnu Maya Oli for the member of the National Inclusive Commission.

However, the decision of the constitutional council to recommend the names for the constitutional bodies would drag into controversies as main opposition leader Sher Bahadur Deuba was absent during the meeting.

Though the meeting of the constitutional council had taken the decision on the basis of the majority, constitutional provision does not envisage such a basis while recommending the names to the constitutional bodies.

The Nepali Congress has been boycotting such meetings constitutionl council alleging the government of disrespecting the voices of the opposition parties.
