Kathmandu, Nepal, December 21, 2021: The ruling head Nepali Congress (NC) has intensified its effort to rectify the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Nepal Compact amid stumbling block posed by the opponents, particularly the communist parties represent in the government and the parliament.

As Nepali Congress President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba intends to ratify the MCC from the ongoing session of the parliament by taking into confidence to all the political parties represent in the parliament including the main opposition CPN UML, he had called an all party meeting on Sunday.

However, hesitation of other parties to retify the MCC from the parliament has posed challenge to reach on consensus. All party meeting had ended inconclusively after other leaders of the ruling allies demanded time to think before reaching out on the consensus to rectify the MCC from the parliament.

As no consensus was made, the meeting had decided to form a three-member task force to discuss and reach a conclusion on the MCC with other political parties. Senior leader of the CPN (Unified Socialist) Jhala Nath Khanal, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki and Vice Chairman of the CPN-Maoist Center Narayan Kaji Shrestha have been incorporated in the committee.

The CPN Maoist Center and the CPN (United Socialist) do not intend to ratify the MCC from the parliament though they have no dare to stand publicly against of the MCC. It is believed that they would compel to stand in favor of endorsing the MCC if the Nepali Congress moves forward the process to endorse the MCC from the parliament as they do not want sever ties with the government and the government head Nepali Congress till the next elections.

Similarly, the main opposition CPN-UML, which had made attempt to endorse the MCC while it was in the government, still wants to rectify from the parliament in condition of getting credit. It is said that the UML would support the NC to endorse the MCC if it agreed to sever ties with the CPN Maoist Center and the CPN (United Socialist) in the government.

The MCC Board of Directors had recently made a decision to seek commitment from the Nepal government over the issue MCC. The US government has already stated that it will not compel Nepal to ratify the MCC if it does not take the grant and the money will be spent in other countries.
