Kathmandu, Nepal, May 21, 2021: Following the recommendation of the cabinet, the president Bidya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the House of Representatives (HoR) and declared the mid-term elections coming in November.
An emergency cabinet meeting held at midnight Friday made a decision to recommend President Bhandari to dissolve parliament and announce dates of holding midterm elections of the HoR in two phases. First phase elections is declared on November 12 and the second phase elections on November 19.
The cabinet meeting decided to recommend the president to dissolve the parliament and declare the mid-term elections just minutes after the office of the president issued a statement stating that there were no credible grounds to form a government as per the article 76(5) of the constitution.
The recommendation of the cabinet to dissolve the parliament for elections was quickly endorsed by President Bhandari. The parliament was dissolved and dates of midterm polls were announced as per Article 76(7), states the statement issued by the office of the president.
As per the call of the president Bhandar on Thursday, Prime Minister KP Oli and the main opposition party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba had staked claim to form government as per the Article 76(5) of the constitution.
The government’s decision to dissolve the parliament is condemned from different sectors. Leaders of the different political parties have termed the decision as a reactionary steps against the achievements enshrined by the constitution.
