Kathmandu, September 23, 2026 — The Government of Japan has provided an emergency grant of US$1 million to strengthen the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) support for the Nepal government’s humanitarian response to the flash floods and debris flows that affected three districts of central Nepal in August.
The floods and debris flows affected Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, leaving families in need of shelter, household items and other essential assistance.
The Japanese funding will enable IOM to provide emergency shelter support and essential household items to the most vulnerable affected families in priority areas. The areas will be identified in coordination with government authorities and humanitarian partners.
“Japan is pleased to provide emergency assistance to support the people affected by the recent floods in Nepal,” Japanese Ambassador to Nepal MAEDA Toru said. He said the assistance would help vulnerable families meet their immediate needs through shelter support and essential non-food items and assist them in restoring basic living conditions.
IOM has deployed teams to the affected districts to assess the situation and identify priority needs. The organization said the assessments are aimed at ensuring that assistance reaches affected communities in a timely and coordinated manner.
The relief materials will be distributed in close coordination with national and local authorities, humanitarian clusters and other partners, including civil society organizations at the national and local levels.
IOM said particular attention would be given to reaching affected households in remote areas and ensuring that assistance reaches communities at the local level.
The organization will also strengthen its Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) measures by establishing and improving accessible complaints and feedback mechanisms.
Through these mechanisms, affected people will be able to safely raise concerns, report problems and provide feedback on the assistance they receive. IOM said this would help ensure that humanitarian support remains responsive to the priorities and needs of affected communities.
“Japan’s generous contribution comes at a critical time for the people of Nepal, who have lost their homes, essential belongings, and loved ones to the devastating floods,” Helene Fors, IOM Chief of Mission in Nepal, said.
She said the contribution would allow IOM to support the Nepal government in providing essential shelter and household assistance to people rebuilding their lives after the floods.
Fors also expressed appreciation to the Government of Japan for its continued support as a humanitarian partner of both IOM and Nepal.
IOM said it would continue working closely with the governments of Nepal and Japan, local authorities, humanitarian organizations and affected communities to ensure that assistance is delivered on time, effectively and transparently.
The organization said the needs and voices of affected people would remain at the centre of its response.
