Kathmandu, Nepal: A total of 7,039 delegates voted in the Nepali Congress election to select the party’s Central Working Committee, with voting ending at 10 p.m. on Friday after several extensions.

According to the Election Committee, 7,039 of the 7,255 delegates attending the party’s 15th General Convention cast their votes. The turnout was about 97 percent of the delegates present.

Voting began on Friday morning but continued until late in the evening. The Election Committee extended the voting hours several times before closing the process at 10 p.m.

With voting complete, the committee has begun preparations for counting the ballots. The votes for the party president will be counted first at the National Assembly Hall.

Incumbent party president Gagan Thapa and Shyam Krishna Khadgi are the two candidates contesting for the top post.

The results of the presidential election are expected to be followed by the counting of votes for other office-bearers and Central Working Committee members. The Election Committee has decided not to begin counting for those positions until the presidential vote count is complete.

The committee has arranged three locations for the counting process. CCTV cameras are also being installed at the counting sites to monitor the process.

The Election Committee said the cameras would help make the counting process orderly and transparent.

The election is a key part of the Nepali Congress’s 15th General Convention, which will determine the party’s leadership and the composition of its Central Working Committee.

The number of votes cast shows that most of the delegates who attended the convention took part in the election. However, the final outcome will depend on the vote count, which will determine who leads the party and who secures positions on its central committee.
