Kathmandu, Nepal, December 13, 2022: A study has shown that fertility rate of Nepal has drastically been decreasing in recent years. Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) Report 2022 released recently by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has shown that the fertility rate in Nepal has decreased by 50 percent in two decades.

The fertility rate of Nepal now stands at 2.1 present, which means that women in Nepal give birth to two children during their reproductive period. In 1996, the birth rate per woman in Nepal was 4.6.

The declining fertility rate is taken as the positive outcome of the awareness about family planning and easy access to family planning materials. Increased access of education and job opportunities to women and the increasing number of youths going abroad have also played vital role for decreasing the fertility rate in the country.

The decreasing fertility rate as well as the growing trend of immigrating youths would become a matter of headache to the country as Nepal may face the problem of under population and trend he burden of high number of aging population in the next few decades if the trend of declining fertility rate continues.
