Bharatpur, Chitwan: For many Nepali families, a diagnosis of blood cancer often brings not only emotional distress but also the daunting prospect of traveling abroad for expensive and complex treatment. That reality could soon begin to change as BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital moves forward with plans to establish Nepal's first state-of-the-art government bone marrow transplant unit with support from the Government of China.
The ambitious project, now in its preparatory phase, is expected to transform the country's cancer care landscape by making one of the most advanced treatments for blood cancers available within Nepal. Hospital officials believe the facility will improve access to life-saving care while easing the financial and emotional burden faced by hundreds of patients who currently have few options other than seeking treatment overseas.
Acting Executive Director of the hospital, Dr. Umesh Nepal, said preparations are progressing steadily. A team of Chinese technical experts recently visited the hospital to assess existing infrastructure and determine the requirements needed to establish the specialized transplant centre.
The delegation inspected hospital facilities and held a series of meetings with officials from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, the Urban Development and Building Construction Project, and the Bharatpur Distribution Centre of the Nepal Electricity Authority. The discussions focused on ensuring that the new facility will have the infrastructure, utilities and technical support necessary to operate safely and efficiently.
According to Dr. Nepal, the project will move into the implementation phase after the completion of the necessary government procedures and the signing of the project agreement. If everything proceeds as planned, construction will begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed within approximately 18 months.
The Government of China is expected to provide assistance worth around 37 million Chinese Renminbi (RMB) for the construction of the building, procurement of sophisticated medical equipment and training of healthcare professionals. An implementation agreement has already been signed between the Government of Nepal and the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), paving the way for the project to move forward.
The bone marrow transplant unit will initially have five specialized beds. Although modest in size, hospital officials say the facility has been designed to deliver highly specialized care that demands advanced technology, strict infection-control measures and a multidisciplinary medical team.
Recognizing that infrastructure alone cannot deliver quality healthcare, the hospital has already begun preparing its workforce. Three doctors and several nursing professionals are currently undergoing specialized training in China to develop the expertise required for bone marrow transplantation. Additional doctors, nurses and technical staff will also receive advanced training so the hospital is fully prepared once the facility becomes operational.
Bone marrow transplantation is one of the most complex procedures in modern medicine and is often the best treatment option for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia and certain inherited blood disorders. It replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells, giving many patients a chance for long-term recovery or cure.
At present, patients requiring this treatment are often referred to hospitals abroad, particularly in India. For many families, the journey involves not only high medical costs but also prolonged stays away from home, accommodation expenses and emotional strain. Some are forced to borrow money or rely on community fundraising to afford treatment.
Doctors say establishing a bone marrow transplant service within Nepal could significantly reduce those burdens. Besides making treatment more accessible, it is expected to allow patients to begin therapy sooner, an important factor in improving outcomes for many blood cancers and serious blood disorders.
The initiative also reflects Nepal's broader efforts to strengthen specialized healthcare services and reduce dependence on foreign medical institutions.
