London: The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) UK has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of world-renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, widely known as Nimsdai, describing his passing as a heartbreaking loss for Nepal and the global Nepali community.
Purja, a world record holder, founder of Elite Exped, and former British Gurkha soldier, died while attempting to summit Broad Peak in Pakistan. His death has sent shockwaves through the international mountaineering community and among Nepalis around the world, particularly those living in the United Kingdom, where he built both his military and mountaineering legacy.
In a statement, NRNA UK said Nimsdai was much more than an exceptional climber. He embodied courage, resilience, ambition, and the belief that determination could overcome even the greatest challenges. Through his historic expeditions and record-breaking achievements, he inspired countless young Nepalis to dream beyond perceived limits and showed the world what Nepal's mountaineers are capable of accomplishing.
The association noted that Purja's years of distinguished service in the British Gurkha Regiment, followed by his remarkable achievements on the world's highest peaks, strengthened the long-standing bond between Nepal and the United Kingdom. His success became a shared source of pride for Nepalis across the globe, especially for the Nepali diaspora in the UK, who regarded him as an ambassador of Nepal's courage and excellence.
"With his untimely passing, Nepal has lost one of its greatest sons, while the Nepali community in the United Kingdom has lost an inspiration, a leader, and a figure who represented hope and possibility," the association said.
NRNA UK stated that Purja's extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire generations of mountaineers, adventurers, and young Nepalis. His fearless spirit, humility, leadership, and unwavering commitment to pushing human limits have left a lasting mark on the history of mountaineering and on the hearts of people across the world.
The association also paid tribute to all climbers who lost their lives in the Broad Peak tragedy, offering prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls. It extended heartfelt condolences to their families, relatives, friends, and loved ones, expressing solidarity with everyone affected by the devastating incident.
Although Nirmal Purja's life ended on one of the world's most challenging mountains, NRNA UK said his legacy will endure far beyond the peaks he conquered, continuing to inspire people to pursue their dreams with courage, discipline, and determination.
