Kathmandu, Nepal, August 23, 2021: President Bidya Devi Bhandari met Chairperson of the proposed CPN (Unified Socialist) Madhav Kumar Nepal at former’s office, Shital Niwas, on Monday.
Though the purpose of the meet is not disclosed yet officially, it is believed that the duo discussed on ranges of issues related to the split in the CPN UML. Reliable source close to Nepal claims that President Bhandari urged Nepal not to split the party.
President Bhadari, who was a former leader of the UML, made such an urge to keep united the party at the time when the split of the party is going to be formalized soon by the Election Commission (EC).
The EC has already summoned the central members of the Nepal-led party for verification on Wednesday to validate the members of the CPN-UML central committee elected from the last general convention. Out of the 203 Central Committee members, Nepal-led faction has submitted signatures of 58 members, which is around 28 percent.
The Political Party Act, which was amended through an ordinance, has made a provision that support of 20 percent of the central committee members or the parliamentary party would be sufficient to split their mother party. The provision of 40 percent members of both the central committee and the parliamentary party need to split a party was amended through the ordinance.
The establishment faction of the UML led by Oli had registered an application at the EC demanding that the petition filed by the Nepal led faction of the CPN-UML seeking to split the party should not be recognized stating that the number of central committee has reached to 260 from 203. However, the EC has decided not to recognize expanded number after the convention.
