Kathmandu, Nepal December 7, 2021: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the representative umbrella organization of Nepalese lawyers, has been continuing its protest against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana demanding his resignation from the post.
The lawyers staged a sit-in at the main entrance of the apex court on Monday as well chanting slogans against the CJ. Addressing the sit-in protest, the lawyers vowed to continue their protest until Chief justice Rana resign from the post.
The NBA has been staging protest against Chief Justice Rana since one and half month ago demanding his resignation. Supreme Court Justice had also boycotted the hearing process echoing the demand of the NBA. The agitating justices have returned into the work now. However, the NBA has still been protesting against chief Justice Rana.
It is likely that stalemate seen in the Supreme Court (SC), the apex court of the country, would not come to end soon as Chief Justice Rana has already made clear that he will not resign but face action as per the constitutional provision.
The political parties have also seemed reluctant to impeach chief Justice Rana as demanded by the lawyers. The protest of the NBA has also created division among the lawyers as a section of lawyers have opposed the protest even raising questing marks of integrity against the NBA leadership.
The NBA has accused Chief Justice Rana of stalling judiciary reform plans suggested by Justice Hari Krishna Karki-led panel, demanding of share in the executive, stalling the hearing of cases filed against the appointments made to constitutional bodies and many others.
Addressing the sit-in protest, NBA vice President Rakshya Basyal said that the NBA would continue its protest against the Chief Justice Rana until he resigned from his post. ‘We will not end protest against Chief Justice Rana until he resign from the post,’ Basyal said ‘political parties should impeach Chief Justice Rana if he continued to refuse to resign from his post.
During the protest, President of Supreme Court Bar Association Purna Man Shakya and advocate Om Prakash Aryal also spoke against of the Chief Justice Rana claiming that their demand should be heard by the political parties.
