Kathmandu, Nepal, June 15, 2021: The Supreme Court (SC), the apex court of the country, has on Monday annulled the Gandaki Province Assembly membership of Krishna Thapa. With the verdict, the number of parliamentarians at Gandaki Province has reduced to 59.

Responding to the separate writ petitions filed by the Rastriya Janamorcha (RJM) and the Gandaki Province Assembly Secretariat, a division bench of SC justices Bishwambhar Shrestha and Kumar Regmi passed the verdict to annual the Gandaki Provincial Assembly membership of Thapa.

The SC has stated in the verdict that it is not appropriate and necessary to reinstate Thapa as the member of the Gandaki Provincial assembly as stated in its earlier interim order.

Earlier on June 6, a single bench of SC Justice Kumar Chudal had issued interim order not to implement the decision of RJM to relieve Thapa from the membership of Gandaki Province Assembly.

Thapa was elected as a provincial assembly member of Gandaki Province from Baglung district representing the RJM. However, the party had decided sack him as the province assembly member after he refused to support the opposition alliance in its bid to stake a claim for the formation of a new government in the province.
