Kathmandu, Nepal, July 31, 2023: Srawan 15 is being celebrated today in Nepal as the Khir Khane (rice-pudding) festival. In Nepali society, there is a tradition of celebrating Srawan by eating kheer.
Kheer is a delicious made by cooking rice in milk mixed with various spices such as coconut, chokada, cashew nuts, raisins, almonds and other spices. Kheer used to be eaten on Srawan 15 with the belief that immediate eating of kheer would improve health affected in the rainy season.
There is long been established tradition of celebrating different festivals with different types of dishes. Dahi and Chiura (Curd and Bitten Rice) used to eaten on Asar 15 while Kheer in Srawan 15.
The Vedic scriptures have defined Kheer as Payas. The Vedic scriptures has also defined Kheer as an important food item that is also used in the rituals of ancestors and gods.
