Kathmandu, Nepal, February 15, 2022: The main opposition CPN UML has backtracked now from its plan to register impeachment motions against some other Supreme Court justices- Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Ishwar Khatiwada and Ananda Mohan Bhattarai.
The speculations were riffed that the UML is registering impeachment motion against foru justices in response to the impeachment motion registered against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana on Sunday by the three ruling parties- Nepali Congress (NC), CPN (Maoist Center) and the CPN (United Socialist).
Though the party has already collected signatures of its lawmakers for the purpose, the Parliamentary Party meeting of the party held on Monday could not reach on the decision, thanks to the differences in the party. However, the meeting has decided to handover the signatures entrusting the party leadership to utilize in case of necessity.
‘The meeting has decided to entrust the party leadership to take appropriate decision at an appropriate time,’ Bishal Bhattarai, chief whip of the party, said after the meeting that necessary decisions will be taken to counter the ruling parties’ move by analyzing the situation objectively.
It is said that some lawmakers including Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Jhapat Rawal, Dipak Prakash Bhatta and Pabitra Niraula Kharel have not only objected the idea to register impeachment motion against justices favoring the suspended Chief justice Rana. It is said that they have also denied to handover their signatures to the party leadership.
During the meeting chairman Oli had argued that the decision of the ruling alliance to register an impeachment motion against Rana was aimed at not only against the party but to defer the local level election announced for May 13.
As the five-member Constitutional Bench formed under the leadership of suspended Chief Justice Rana comprising above mentioned justices had overturned the KP Oli led government’s decision to dissolve the parliament and ordered appointment of Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister, the UML has been demanding of impeachment motion against all the justices.
