Kathmandu, Nepal: World Blood Donor Day is being observed today across the globe, honoring the life-saving contributions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors and raising awareness about the ongoing need for safe blood supplies.

This year’s theme, “One Drop of Humanity. Donate Blood. Save Lives.”, underscores the humanitarian value of blood donation, framing it as an act of solidarity and collective responsibility.

Health experts emphasize that blood donation goes beyond a routine medical procedure, representing a powerful gesture of compassion that strengthens community bonds. Despite significant progress in blood safety and screening technologies, many countries—particularly in low- and middle-income regions—continue to struggle with shortages and unequal access to safe blood and blood products, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO stated that the key objectives of this year’s campaign include encouraging regular voluntary blood donations, increasing public awareness about the importance of both blood and plasma donation, and urging governments and organizations to invest more in national blood programs.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to ensure universal access to safe blood transfusions, reinforcing the principle that safe blood should be available to everyone, whenever it is needed.
