Kathmandu, Nepal:. Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said Nepal sought international support for the recovery and reconstruction of areas affected by the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli floods during his meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Speaking to reporters at Tribhuvan International Airport after returning from New York on Tuesday, Khanal said he briefed foreign ministers and senior officials from several countries on the damage caused by the August 26 floods.
The floods affected Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other areas, damaging houses, roads, bridges, hydropower projects and other infrastructure.
Khanal said Nepal also raised the disaster in the context of growing climate risks in the Himalayan region and called for greater international support for disaster preparedness, early-warning systems, climate-resilient infrastructure and climate finance.
He held bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and senior officials from several countries, with talks also covering trade, investment, labour, tourism, energy and other areas of cooperation.
Several countries and international agencies have announced assistance for Nepal’s flood response and recovery. Khanal said the government would work with development partners to mobilise the pledged support for reconstruction.
The government now faces the task of repairing damaged infrastructure and helping affected families and businesses recover their homes and livelihoods.
